Children have a vote at the cabinet table –
Start Strong welcomes the new Minister for Children.
10th March 2011
Start Strong, a coalition of organisations and individuals campaigning for children’s early care and education, welcomes the appointment of Frances Fitzgerald to the new role of Minister for Children. Start Strong is delighted that there is a Minister for Children, who can provide dedicated leadership on children’s issues.
Ciairín de Buis, Director of Start Strong, says: “We are delighted to see a new Minister for Children appointed. We very much welcome Minister Frances Fitzgerald to her new role – being the voice of children and being able to vote for children at the cabinet table. Minister Fitzgerald will play a crucial role if we are to achieve the commitments for children that are in the new Programme for Government: Towards Recovery: Programme for a National Government 2011 – 2016. Start Strong very much looks forward to working with the new Minister for Children and her new Department.
Start Strong hopes that the creation of the new role of Minister for Children marks the new ambition Ireland has for our children. Creating a Minister for Children was a key proposal of Start Strong’s Children 2020 report published last year, which sets out how Ireland can move towards having world-class provision of supports and services for early childhood.
